Keep Your Muscles Guessing: Why Resistance Bands Are a Must in Your Workouts

If you’ve been following my fitness journey, you know I’ve been training with resistance bands since the 1980s. Over the decades, I’ve used almost every type of band on the market, and I’ve learned that incorporating them into your workouts is one of the best ways to get stronger, leaner, and more toned.

If you’ve been following my fitness journey, you know I’ve been training with resistance bands since the 1980s. Over the decades, I’ve used almost every type of band on the market, and I’ve learned that incorporating them into your workouts is one of the best ways to get stronger, leaner, and more toned.  I have curated a list on Amazon for you to easily purchase the bands right for you.

I’ve created thousands of televised workouts using resistance bands for training. Did you know I even had a hotel room workout in partnership with Hilton Hotels, where guests could purchase a resistance band on top of the minibar? I know, so iconic, right? And if that weren’t enough, United Airlines and I partnered to lead an in-flight workout for passengers to do while they were in their seats. Honestly, I think I should bring that back!

Why Resistance Bands Work

Resistance bands challenge your muscles in a way that free weights sometimes can’t. They create continuous tension, which forces your muscles to work throughout the entire movement. The beauty of bands is that they allow you to train your body in multiple planes of motion, targeting muscles differently and keeping them guessing. And when your muscles don’t know what’s coming next? That’s when you get better results.

My Go-To Bands

After decades of experimenting, I’ve found a few favorites that I keep coming back to:

  • Extra Light & Light Bands – Perfect for beginners, or if you want to add extra reps without overloading your muscles.

  • Shorter Versa Loops – Ideal for leg exercises like squats, glute bridges, and lateral walks.

  • Longer Bands (with or without handles) – Perfect for upper-body exercises, stretching, and full-body workouts.

Why I Love Them

  • Portable: Throw them in your gym bag, take them on vacation, or keep them at home.

  • Versatile: From legs to arms to core, bands let you target every muscle group.

  • Progressive: Easily increase resistance by stacking bands or choosing a heavier option as you get stronger.

If you’re just starting out, I recommend picking up an extra light and light band, one shorter Versa Loop, and one longer band with or without handles. These simple tools will help you get the most out of your workouts while keeping your muscles challenged and engaged.

Resistance bands aren’t just a trend—they’re a staple. And after 40+ years in fitness, I can tell you: your workouts will be stronger, smarter, and more effective when you keep your muscles guessing.

Not all resistance bands are created equal. The ones I recommend are high-quality, durable, and built to last, so you won’t have to replace them after just a few uses.
